Hi Jason Segel. Listen, it’s not you, it’s me. I still love you like mad, but your TV show just isn’t doing it for me anymore. When I first started watching How I Met Your Mother, it was hilarious and clever and I’m crazy about Marshall Eriksen. But lately, I’ve been seeing someone else. It’s Zooey Deschanel on New Girl. And I’m smitten.
The characters of HIMYM are starting to figure their lives out. Which, honestly, is sort of how things are going for most of my 30something friends: they got married, they are making babies, and they are buying tailored suits. I’m proud of, and excited for, my friends. But I hit the brakes on my life plan recently and I have no idea what I’m doing. I’m confused and lost and I love fake lashes.
Community is still my favourite TV show. Recently, Annie told a struggling Abed, that “good news”, his fear of being alone and misunderstood is shared by everyone and connects us. But something about New Girl has resonated with me in a way that HIMYM hasn’t achieved since Marshall’s dad died. It seems like the characters are feeling the same way I do about their frustration to figure things out. Life things. Things that I’m worried other people don’t worry about as much as I do. Eventually I assume I’ll get my shit together too. But until then, I like watching other people my age struggle to find change for beer and coffee.
I am excited to see Segel’s The Five-Year Engagement. Not just because I would probably watch him read the entire Bible to an ant farm, but because it looks endearingly charming. Zooey plays Emily Blunt’s sister too, so the adorable index is off the charts. I’m attracted to the idea that life gets in the way of this couple’s big plan to get married, and the way that we let ourselves get caught up in the expectations of other people. Do people expect anything from me? Am I projecting my own expectations and disappointment in myself on to the faces of others? Are cookies the answer to my problems? Please say yes. Don’t you start judging me too.
In discussions with a friend over twitter, we have also decided that rompers are the best thing ever. Zooey wears these cute shorts/shirt combos and I have been coveting them. Victoria Secret has some adorable sets for summer and there is a whole website called “What Would Zooey Deschanel Wear?” at www.wwzdw.com. I also want her red polka dot bikini.
Oh, and in case you missed some of the Jason Segel awesomeness from earlier this year,
All Hail Beercules!
