By Matt Baker, February 6 2012
Shall I compare thee to an E. coli?
Thou art less ubiquitous and temperate.
When other bugs do dessicate and die,
Thy compatible solutes ameliorate.
Sometime too bright the eye of heaven shines,
And ultraviolet light embraces.
But membrane pigments: red, yellow, and wines,
By chance, then maintained, evolved to save graces.
When temp’ratures drop, ice shall not kill,
Nor halt thine activity, sub zero.
Nor shall death come, grown upon a salt hill,
Low water activity, my hero.
Not needing oxygen to breathe or be,
Long live extremity, gives life to thee.
